Went me to another concert last night. This time it was some extravaganza organized by some dude... intentions I guess in the right place although ultimately a bit fishy... allow me to explain...
Initially, this really rich guy decides to do a free concert in Jerusalem, with many bands and stuff... just because Jerusalem has the right to rock... or something like that... (yeah yeah... the right to rock... don't get me started)
Lord knows why he decides that 2007 is the year and not say the cultural and emotional dry spell if not to say depression that swept over all of us (ex-Jeruselamites and Jerusalem people in general) say between 1994-1999.. .you know when buses were exploding every second, when there seemed to be no chance for peace, when Rabin was assassinated... when nobody came here because it was perceived as a war zone... and we were all pretty miserable... No no, so fine he decides to do a free concert at the Hell Mouth... better known to most at the Teddy Stadium, home of the most racist human hating soccer club in the world currently (Beitar Yerushalaim) and to make matters worse currently owned by a well renowned Russian Oligarch Gaydamak... So... some how the free concert turned into a very expensive concert 360 nis... which is like why the fuck do a concert then make people pay for something that there isnt a great demand for... There is a difference if you bring The Commitments, Arrested Developments and the BEP for free and if you want to charge people, and where of all places, in Jerusalem... Dude, obviously not Israeli... what the hell are you doing?!
1. The Commitments and Arrested are really great, and I remember them fondly from 1990 when they were the biggest thing around... but shall we say their glory days are over... so nobody will pay 300+ Shekels to see them in concert, when in addition to that you have to pay for gas and parking in Jerusalem for Christ sake...
2. The BEP - whom I love dearly, were actually here last year!!! Orange (Partner) brung them as a part of their annual summer music festivals... (this year NIN) so, basically whom ever wanted to see the BEP really wanted to see them saw them last year in concert in Tel-Aviv... (over 100 thousand screaming fans... was really great) So basically not many people that already saw them would make the effort to see them again... (as visualized by Will I Am's question last eve... "who of you saw us last year in concert?" and me and 3 other losers shouted... wooooo)
3. there seems to be a miss correlation between the age groups that know and would appreciate The BEP and those that even know The Commitments/Arrested... on a "love them so much that I must see them all in concert..."
So... basically, even I was like... I aint paying 360 shekels for this shit... I mean I am one of the sole people who has no problem going to Jerusalem... although I am starting to question that... I love all 3 bands, and I actually can afford to go... and I was like "how did a free concert turn into a fucking expensive one... and in smack dab on the Hell Mouth..." fuck this shit, I will see them abroad...
So, I tried getting myself a free ticket, and was successful in the attempt :) and thankfully so, as overall I can say, that a combination of not giving a shit about my surroundings, (I jumped up and down like a mad woman) in addition to the perseverance of The Peas to get people pumpin'... made last eve's event overall not too sucki... for me at least... I wonder what they thought...
I mean, they really are such pros and so cool and they know their their shit and they just don't miss, and somehow they were even able to get the lame ass, lazy, controlled Puritan natured, "why was I forced to be here" Jerusalemites assholes, to jump up and down and even... dare I say it... have a good time. Fun is not one of the religions practiced in Jerusalem.
Would you find it strange if I said it is more difficult to jump in Jerusalem? As if you are trying to lift off your shoulders years or history...
It took a while for this fun having to occur... It didn't come easy God forbid... it is as if 3 warm up acts just couldn't do it... You could pluck out the Tel-Aviv-ites with a tweezer... we were the ones jumping up and down and screaming when the Commitments were on stage... and by the time the Peas had gone on, we were actually warmed up... I suppose one could claim the coolish weather didn't help, I suppose, but really I attribute it more to the fact that in a city like Jerusalem... with all its violent fundamental history, and even nowadays, when Fergie's pic was taken off the posters promoting the concert... as they were offensive... and this is a "concert for peace..." then... what can really be expected... Ok, so Jerusalem had a few glory years apparently with the Bohemian types in the 60's and 70's maybe also during David's days... but those days are long gone...
In short... (not anymore...) despite The Peas truly rocking and actually Arrested and The Commitments were very very cool, and even though I did have a really good time... and I am happy for going and making the effort, I can conclude that Jerusalem sucks....
It is a sad fact as I grew up there and spent most of my life there... and share many of the attributes that its inhibitors share... things I may never be able to shake off... the closed mindedness, the conservatism, the paranoia... not to mention years of trauma from within and without... oh yeah... and the obsessive fear of wearing skirts combined with the need to carry a bog bag and a warm top with me wherever I go...
Thankfully I am not there anymore... Currently I am willing to consider visiting there during the Jerusalem Film Fest, providing a film I worked on, or films of my closest friends are being screened... maybe work related issues, if the BEP should appear there again... although lets face it highly un-likely... or if for some strange reason... my husbands family should reside there...
I think I am saying goodbye to Jerusalem forever... I shall leave Jerusalem to the fanatics and those who have realized that life on the other side is so much better.
Pics and maybe even a vid from the concert to come
Oh yeah, 7000 people attended... and it was held at the Sultan Pool... or how ever you call it in English
OK, and so... if this wasn't embracing enough... then here are 2 articles that I found online... please watch the video and you know... try not to die of shame...
