surgery and Stepford Wives

My good friend (not me, really) went into surgery this morning... to have a kind of benign tumor removed from her liver... 8.5 c"m of a growth, on her right part of her liver.

They "Mercedesed" her belly, as the doctors put it, one straight line and then two lines one going left and the other going right... they went in, removed the tumor and closed her up...

Thank the Lord above, her hubby says that she is in recovery, and she is doing well...

Fucking shit... now, these things happen, I guess, and to more people then we would like to think, but the thing that really pisses me off is that most likely that this shit, in her case, was caused because of the fucking PILL... the lovely PILL, the freeing pill, the female liberating pill... bla bla WHATEVS...

I love the fact that both men and women are convinced, without a shadow of a doubt, that the pill has in some way liberated women... why, because they now control baby having? Like the pill is the only way to not have babies... and what about SVD?

Who is really liberated by the PILL? Why is a woman, that is not in touch with her hormonal cycle, liberated? Why, because she has no PMS , bigger boobs and no zitts... yes, liberated like the Hebrew Slaves... As liberated as the black person in Alabama in the 1950's...

Fuck that shit, that is the biggest BS I have heard in a long time... now again, you are free to do whatever you want, and should think before you do... but most people don't, I read in a book that "humanities natural drive for liberty is finally overpowered by the force of custom..." and custom is a major factor in the things we do... we do because our parents have done before them... and so on... and what to do... people don't think, does that mean they should suffer? This is the thing I am no yet dealing with... In "The Matrix", every person that is not free is a potential danger, and therefore disposable...

Maybe you are free, maybe, when you decide to take the PILL and know the risks that are involved, and then do so anyways... like smoking, for example... providing you really believe that there are 43 different poisons in a cigarettes, and that SMOKING KILLS as they so blatantly place on a pack of smokes... maybe...

Now, I had me a discussion about this shit with my bro, and he was talking about personal responsibility... now, I agree, I guess that if you are taking something into your body, for so many years, you might want to, on occasion, kind of see what it is doing to you. At the end of the day, it is our lives and if we wait for somebody to help us... except for our close friends and family, maybe, if we are lucky, even here in Israel, we will be dead... what to do, that is the harshness and yet reliable reality, I believe, in which we live...

So what, there is nobody to blame? Nobody? It is only the responsibility of the individual? And what about society? It has no impact on anything? What about hiding information? What about encouraging the use of the pill in teenage girls? Oh, it is encouraged, by them doctors and the of the Israeli health service, who I am slowly beginning to be convinced are a very direct messenger of the man himself... Doctors are, as in the Prisoner, our society's number 2...

Take for example, my family doctor in Hod Hasharon. She will not give me any drugs... even when I am really sick, she dismisses ever so emphatically my self diagnosis... could be that if I played dumb, I would actually receive the drugs.. now I don't care anymore, for I have decided not to go see doctors... because they suck... at least not them KUPAT HOLIM doctors... but, to make my point, she is more than willing to give me a few forms, saying I am sick, and by doing so, getting me paid sick days off work... now because I am unable to hold a 9-5 job, per say... can't work regular hours... bla ect., whatever, these things have never been of any importance to me... my lifestyle pretty much dictates working when there is work to be done, and resting when there is no work... without any relation to your physical well being... it is the price I pay for my "freedom"... but you can see where I am heading with this... meaning, she is a form person... like the kind people at the tax shop... and why shouldn't she represent the institution, her schooling was financed by them, so she is now working for them... makes perfect sense...

Naturally, my friend is doing her surgery privately, paying shit loads of money, tens of thousands of shekels... why? Because public health services here in Israel are a fucking joke, you would think with the amount of money invested in them, she is only 28, so has herself only been paying I guess, 10 years or so... but, had she taken all the money she has paid over the years and invested it into the surgery, she would still have change in her fucking pockets... she would have been able to save all this money now...

Now I am stating the obvious... but still frustrating... especially, seeing most people don't even see what it is I am talking about, they tell me to stop looking for conspiracy theories...

Stop looking for conspiracy theories!

No, heh, I kid.

But seriously, there's no conspiracy. It's really that everything is horribly innefficient, and it's really that nobody cares.

Also, society is comprised of individuals, so trying to toss responsibility onto the group doesn't work. Reminded me of one of your own personal long-standing peeves with why it is okay to show a man's breast on TV?

I didn't realise I had a long standing peeve with that... I am in the "I could give a shit mode." Although, really, i don't get what the big deal about nudity in film and tv is anyways... it wouldn't be such a big thing if people didn't make it into a big thing... I make PG 13 films on the conceptual level... I think... really there si no probelm showing nudity if nudity is just another thing you show, like a nose, or a tooth... Wouldn't you agree?
In anycase, I fear you are rightabotu society being formed from a bunch of individuals... although wanker individuals... :p

firstly, i shall address the boob issue:
according to my fine ex-tutor, 16th century historian Dr. Angela McShane-Jones, boob flashing was totally common at several points during the 16th and 17th century. she can show you historical proof of this as she has studied Broadside Ballads and other ephemera dealing with fads and fashions of a now-idealised past. There are also booklets instructing 17th century fashionistas in the art of powedering their nipples for special occasions. Not only were breasts explosed, costumes tailored to expose them, documents written about this, pictures painted, broadside ballads printed and sung about exposed breasts, they were also made up and displayed with intent, according to the 'norms of society'. on the other hand, men at the time did not go around showing their breast. so, ha!

now, regarding the PILL: i am with you and i think the issue is more complex than saying that we are just a bunch of individuals. our ideas and knowledge are made up of cognitive processes and cultural exchanges. consensual knowledge forms an important part of what we think we know. so, the general attitutes surrounding the pill had a great deal of impact about how we treated it. it naturally also impacted the type of research conducted about its effects. categorization of phenomena is essencially a social process which relies on various forms of concensus. i am now drifting a bit off the subject, and i also dont recall the details of this in any depth, but i know that one of the african leaders was accused by 'westerners' of living in denial because he refused to acknowledge aids as a viral disease associated with homosexuality and drug abuse. if i recall correctly, he argued that aids was a heterosexual disease incited by poverty. now, the arrogance of the west (the west is the best) dictates that we agree with all the tests which say aids is a viral disease. but this categorization serves western agendas. it is a theory constructed and empirically backed by evidence, but that still does not make it true. the history of science is a long list of theories backed by empirical evidence which turn obselete in time with the advent of new theories and new empirical evidence to support the theories. which leads us to ask: where do these ideas come from? i'd argue that in part, they kind of circulate on a social level. i think that society is more than the sum of its individuals. so back to the pill: the idea that the pill liberated women and the need for men and women to see in the pill an instigator of liberation, a moment of historical rupture from the past, led to a general consensus in the medical and non-medical community that it was safe, safer than abortions, positive etc. the state supported monopoly-juristiction which doctors enjoy over all things 'medical' is one of the key reasons almost no one felt compelled to question just how reasonable the subjection of the female body to hormonal regiment really was.
now, every woman who took the pill took it not because there was a gun to her head. but on the other hand, the state has determined that only doctors have the authority to determine what chemicals may be consumed for medicinal purposes, hormonal contraception being incorporated under medicinal. because teachers, rabbis, witch-doctors, musicians or prostitutes did not have the right to distribute this form of contraception, doctors also gained the authority to recommend the pill. had teachers been granted the monopoly on pill prescription, perhpas public opinion would have been different. we will never know. but anyway, the fact the doctors gave out prescription legitimised the consumption of the pill, encouraging uncritical consumpion. the responsibility with prescribed drugs is distributed between the doctor and patient, unlike the responsibility with say over the counter medication. so we didnt think to question this.
thankfully, today we know that doctors as such are not to be trusted. just like i would not buy a washing machine on the simple and single recommendation of the sales assistant at one store, so i will not trust a doctor's diagnosis wihout doing some shopping round, some reading-up etc. like in other areas, the sovereignty of the state and all its institutions, including the medical profession, are loosing their ground.
